Abstract
The liberalisation of the electricity markets and resulting emergence of competition have created a need for greater transparency towards consumers. The idea is to provide consumers with several criteria for selecting their electricity supplier, thus granting them an influence on production structures and allowing them to contribute to the development of a sustainable energy supply system. For this purpose the EU has set itself the goal of creating an appropriately transparent electricity labelling system involving the use of certificates of origin and has obliged the member states to transpose such requirements into national law. This article examines the relevant German and Austrian regulations and identifies points of departure for establishing a uniform procedure for the entire EU.
