    On the challenges of empowering citizens in technological innovation matters
    (2018-10)
    ;
    ;
    In order to counteract a constant global warming, the empowerment of civil society and economy are considered necessary prerequisites for the energy transition. Responsive forms of participation have to be considered in an early phase of projects and employed continuously throughout the intention. However, there are common challenges within participation processes. We illustrate a use case consisting of the implementation of technological innovations using a slow bottom-up approach. Our main thesis suggests that an active interference of social space leads to higher technology acceptance and therefore to an easier implementation of innovative technologies to increase the citizens’ quality of life. Due to the fact that our target group shows high diversity we focus on specific mediators that influence technology acceptance. Therefore, we conducted a mixed-method approach with quantitative and qualitative components. We present our main results and experiences of the first project phase in this article.

    A User Perspective on current Drivers and Barriers for Electric Vehicle Usage in Austria
    (SDEWES Centre, 2021-10)
    ;
    ;
    The global electric vehicle market is rapidly growing, which is an important step, as electro-mobility is an essential driver for achieving climate targets. However, acceptance of electric vehicles is still lacking among potential users. To overcome their skepticism, it is necessary to understand the decisive factors for the consumers’ decision-making process. Therefore, this work investigates essential drivers and barriers to electric vehicle adoption derived from international literature. Electric vehicle users from the electro-mobility-club Austria were interviewed by means of an online survey. Importance-performance analysis was conducted to analyze the data. Interpretations are supported by means of receiver operating characteristic analysis. The results show that the environmental performance of electric vehicles is a key motivator for participants and that this is already perceived as satisfying. Major barriers governments and manufactures should address are acquisition cost, range and time consumption associated with the usage of electric vehicles.

    Wie Geschichten wirken : Zum Stand der Wirkungsforschung über Storytelling
    (Springer, 2019)
    ;
    Ameseder, Christian
    ;
    Dieser Artikel geht der Frage nach (1) welche empirischen Ergebnisse aktuell zum Thema der Wirkung von Storytelling vorliegen, (2) welches Storytellingverständnis in den Beiträgen angewandt wird, (3) welche Untersuchungsdesigns für die Wirkungsforschung von Storytelling angewandt werden, (4) wie valide die Forschungsdesigns und haltbar einzelne Ergebnisse sind und schließlich (5) was sich über die einzelnen Wirkungsdimensionen aussagen lässt. Dabei wurden 62 wissenschaftliche Beiträge einer Analyse unterzogen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass in den untersuchten Beiträgen die stärksten Effekte sowohl in absoluten Zahlen als auch in der Regressionsanalyse für die Erinnerung und leicht dahinter für die Verständlichkeit nachgewiesen werden. In der Regressionsanalyse sind auch die Befunde zur Wirkung von Storytelling auf die Glaubwürdigkeit sehr stark. Für die positive Wirkung auf Überzeugungskraft/Handeln gibt es viele starke Effekte aus einzelnen Studien. In der Regressionsanalyse liegt dann die Wirkung von Storytelling auf Erinnerung, Glaubwürdigkeit, Verständlichkeit und Interesse sogar signifi kant vor der häufi g beforschten Wirkung von Storytelling auf Überzeugungskraft/ Handeln. Kritisch lässt sich anmerken, dass die Studien starke Mängel im Begriffsverständnis von Storytelling aufweisen und auf studentische ProbandInnen fokussiert sind.Dieser Artikel geht der Frage nach (1) welche empirischen Ergebnisse aktuell zum Thema der Wirkung von Storytelling vorliegen, (2) welches Storytellingverständnis in den Beiträgen angewandt wird, (3) welche Untersuchungsdesigns für die Wirkungsforschung von Storytelling angewandt werden, (4) wie valide die Forschungsdesigns und haltbar einzelne Ergebnisse sind und schließlich (5) was sich über die einzelnen Wirkungsdimensionen aussagen lässt. Comparison of Black Box Models for Load Profile Generation of District Heating Networks
    (2017-10)
    ;
    Black box modeling is a fast and efficient way of creating models for generating the heat demand of a district heating networks. A sufficient amount of high quality data has to be collected to form the basis for a valid model that can serve as training and test stand for the models. The model parameters and their influence on the heat demand are investigated and a model structure is derived. With this structure, five data mining algorithms, namely Multiple Linear Regression (LR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest (RF), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are utilized for creating the load models for a small district heating network located in southeast of Austria. Except for LR, all algorithms showed a good performance. They are well suited for that kind of task. K-NN has the best regression score metric with an average MAPE of 13.49 %.

    Geschichten aus der Wissenschaft : Die Wirkungen von narrativen Texten in der Wissenschaftskommunikation am Beispiel der Ernährungsaufklärung auf Nachrichtenwebsites in Österreich
    (Springer, 2019)
    ;
    Der vorliegende Beitrag geht der Frage nach, ob Geschichten die Vermittlung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse unterstützen können. Die Wirkungen einer narrativen Darstellung auf das Interesse, die Verständlichkeit und die Glaubwürdigkeit wurden mit drei Methoden untersucht: einer Dokumentenanalyse, einem qualitativen und einem quantitativen Experiment. Beim quantitativen Experiment mit 126 ProbandInnen ergaben sich keine signifi kanten Unterschiede zwischen einem narrativen und einem nicht-narrativen Text. Beim Interesse und der Glaubwürdigkeit ergaben sich leichte Tendenzen zugunsten des nicht-narrativen Textes. Eine narrative Darstellung könnte hingegen nach objektiven Maßen – und entgegen der eigenen Wahrnehmung – für Personen mit niedrigerer Ausbildung verständlicher sein.

    An interdisciplinary approach of a local peer-to-peer energy trading model for a more sustainable power grid
    (SDEWES Centre, 2021-10)
    ;
    ;
    ;
    ;
    This work investigates a novel distance-based electricity tariff applicable to energy communities. Based on a mixed integer linear optimization model computational studies are conducted to investigate the effects of this tariff on a small-scale community consisting of 22 consumers and 5 prosumers. Additionally, the potential of electric storage systems supporting the use of locally produced energy is investigated. The results of the computational model prove that an energy community generates incentives photovoltaic plants and the installation of energy storage systems. Complementary to the simulations, the flexibility options are supported by a user survey focusing on technology attributes for local energy market models, proving that there is a significant awareness for the use of energy storage systems.
