Project Management in a cultural context
    (University of Latvia, 2019-04)

Theories of project management are well structured guidelines to bring projects to success. Available studies on project success factors stress out that commitment on decisions, reliability and engagement within organizations as well as the benefit for the project sponsor decide over success or failure. In an international context projects face other cultural, technical and economic challenges. For project teams that work together in EU-funded projects the acceptance of cultural differences and the consideration of one´s own and foreign cultural peculiarities form the basis for a successful cooperation. These projects usually produce results for several project sponsors, decisions are made by the coordinator and not directly with the project manager on the partner side. Agile methodologies are simply not possible and project communication is well defined in the project planning phase and alignments are difficult to put through. The authors of this paper stress out that one important project success factor are culture. According to current literature this issue in the context of international project management has potential for further research. With the aim to close this gap a set of selected EU-funded projects are analysed for success factors and problem areas. This paper provides the criteria catalogue of the conducted analysis and a recommended course of action.

Standards for Productive Knowledge Work : Theoretical Foundation and 121 Application of an Analysis Technique
    (World Scientific Publishing, 2007-08)

Work productivity is certainly a major factor for economic success. For organizations with highly knowledge intensive processes and products, it is knowledge work productivity that counts. The paper introduces a multi step potential analysis of knowledge work productivity and its application to several organizations. The analysis combines assessments of (1) knowledge intensity, (2) productivity with respect to typical intellectual activities such as information processing, communication, decision making, and learning, as well as (3) organizational adaptability. In this process, the difference between more or less productivity is captured by the degree to which knowledge is handled in accordance with explicit standards compared to being handled in an arbitrary manner. Results of the analysis are then used to propose both short and medium term action plans for more productive knowledge work.

With the increasing popularity of cloud computing, security in cloud-based applications is gaining awareness and is regarded as one of the most crucial factors for the long term success of such applications. Despite all benefits of cloud computing, its fate lies in its success in gaining trust from its users achieved by ensuring cloud services being built in a safe and secure manner. This work evaluates existing security standards and tools for creating Critical Infrastructure (CI) services in cloud environments -- often implemented as cyber physical systems (CPS). We also identify security issues from a literature review and from a show case analysis. Furthermore, we analyse and evaluate how mitigation options for identified open security issues for CI in the cloud point to individual aspects of standards and guidelines to support the creation of secure CPS/CI in the cloud. Additionally, we presented the results in a multidimensional taxonomy based on the mapping of the issues and the standards and tools. We show which areas require the attention as they are currently not covered completely by existing standards, guidelines and tools.
