The idea is to provide consumers with several criteria for selecting their electricity supplier, thus granting them an influence on production structures and allowing them to contribute to the development of a sustainable energy supply system. For this purpose the EU has set itself the goal of creating an appropriately transparent electricity labelling system involving the use of certificates of origin and has obliged the member states to transpose such requirements into national law.
